February 2008

In Scarlett's fifth week of life it's become apparent she's had a myriad of experiences. She has now been to three basketball games, some of daddy's win's and some that were ugly enough she probably thought she could have played in. She has been across the state to Climax to see G'ma and G'pa Stortroen. She's been to Target a couple of times and American Eagle. She has met Great Grandpa and Grandma Ranum. She has even met her daycare lady! She overall isn't quite sure why her puppy she doesn't yet know is hers is so happy to meet her!

Scarlett is getting close to an actual social smile. Dad is pretty sure she smiled on her changing table, which may be her favorite place. She already is becoming slightly narcissistic and loves to look at how pretty she is in the mirror while getting changed - which is the cutest. She only has one hobby, which is nursing, but she is very good at it so she does it as often as mommy will allow. She is making more noises and starting to develop speech, but her lack of knowledge of the English language tends to eventually evolve into frustration when Mom and Dad can't seem figure to out what she is saying.

She might be the strongest five month old God ever created. She has noticeably grown and loves to sit on Dad's lap and hold her head up. She even tries to stand a little bit when we hold her upright - pretty impressive. Dad is pretty sure she'll be able to hit a driver 50 yards on the golf course by 9 months.

Parenthood has all the unique challenges you hear about but never fully understand until you do it. Dad gets to watch less of the end of basketball games. Mom's life is completely consumed with whatever need she has - or thinks she currently has! But as everyone has always told us, there is nothing like it and it certainly is the greatest joy either of us have ever experienced. As we watch her figure out things - like that's actually her in the mirror, or that she has a thumb that can be sucked - we enjoy every minute. Both sets of Grandparents can't get enough of her and are biasedly convinced she is one of the cutest children in the world.

The only one not real sure about Scarlett being around might be Malley (Our 13 month old puppy) who might be the most neglected and jealous dog over the last 5 weeks in America. She'll get over it - she doesn't have much choice!

We have been truly overcome by the amount of support from our friends and families in the means of calls, emails and gifts. Thanks to everyone who has sent gifts, cards, made calls, sent emails, come to visit and cares enough about our "tiny dancer" to check out our website.

    God Bless
    -Dad

Tanya M:  That is one of the sweetest updates I've ever read! It is so fun to hear about your experiences, since we ourselves just went through that stage a couple months ago and are still learning new things every day with our 'lil man! We can't wait to meet her! (P.S. I think you meant she is the strongest 5 week old God ever created! But I know time flies by and it can seem like months already!) :)

Scarlett is getting to be adventurous in her 3rd week of life!
Last week on the warmest sunniest day I decided I needed to get out of the house and make a much needed trip to Target. Scarlett and I started to get ready to go with great intentions of leaving the house at a decent time. I think she knew what was up because she thought it would be a great idea to nurse every 20 minutes during the time of when I wanted to leave the house. I finally got her to sleep (meanwhile the car has been running for close to 30 min.) so I proceeded to put her in the car seat. Well...of course she woke up crying! So I took her out and rocked her for a while and we finally settled into the car seat and made our way out the door. She was a complete angel and slept for the entire trip but of course I was a super fast shopper for fear that she would wake up hungry in the middle of Target!
Scarlett also went to her first Basketball game to see Daddy coach St. Francis. We made it just in time to see the last 2 1/2 minutes. Another example of how long it takes us to leave the house! Good thing the game went into double overtime and St. Francis won so Scarlett is definitely the good luck charm.

We are having so much fun with our sweet baby girl. We could just watch her all day waiting for her sweet facial expressions and hearing her sweet sounds. I don't even mind the crying! And she smells so delicious! We just love her so much.

Thank you everyone for all the sweet cards and gifts! You are so thoughtful.

Scarlett is now 2 weeks old - we can't believe how fast these weeks have gone by.
Today we brought her to the Pediatrician for her two week check up. Her Jaundice is defiantly getting better though she is still a little "yellow". We were excited to see that she is gaining weight and mommy's breastfeeding efforts are paying off! She has gained 4 oz. since last Friday. She is right on for weight & height but her head - wow she has a big head. They said she is in the 90th percentile for head circumference. That's great news to us because that means she will get a fabulous scholarship to Concordia! :-) Or she has just taken after daddy in the big head department.
All was well in the Dr. Office until Scarlett started to cry - that mommy I am STARVING cry and I got really nervous because it can take upwards of 15 min. for her to latch on plus the added pressure of nursing her in front of the Dr. could definitely add on more time. Much to both mom & dad's surprise she latched on right away. It's the little things thats for sure! See up until a couple days ago we were using all sorts of gimmicks & tricks to get her to nurse so we have made vast improvements in this area.
The area we still need work on is getting her to realize what bedtime is. She is still pretty sure night time is her favorite time to be awake. Her longest stretch of sleep at night is 3 hours. I was all excited that I actually got to sleep for 3 hours but when I told my mom she said "sorry to break it to you, but that's not very good!" Oh well, at least I know it will only get better. Today I had a two hour nap with the little princess and that was fabulous.
Well Scarlett - we have survived the first two weeks and that is pretty exciting. :-)

Cara:  Hi Bridget!!! So glad to hear things are going well!!! OH, take it all in slowly...they grow so fast! Isn't having a baby just the most precious thing you've ever experienced? Great Job for sticking with nursing...you'll never regret it! Can't wait to see you all!
Abbey:  Sounds like you are getting the hang of things. Glad to hear the jaundice is getting better.
    Thanks for the update!
Kelsey:  OH DEAR! 3 hours, that's it? I will be praying for you Bridget! Even short on sleep, you are doing an amazing job as a new mommy! I'm proud of you for working through the difficulties of nursing! I have often wondered why it's not easier for both mom and baby if that was what God intended the mommies to do! :) I love seeing and reading your updates! Keep them coming! But, take another nap first! :) Love you...
heidi schatz:  Oh sounds like you all are just doing a super job! I have to tell you everything you are going through brings back so many memories. Evan just turned 9 weeks old and last night he slept 7hrs straight!! YAY!! It only gets better. I think nursing is one of the hardest things to get the hang of (I just never could) and it's nice to know that all mothers struggle with that at first, hang in there!! Sounds like you're doing just great!:)
